Generation of transversal envelope soliton in polymeric and wooden rods
2014, UltrasonicsCitation Excerpt :Usually it is not easy to identify the orthogonal directions and single spherical samples [40] have to be machined from the investigated cylindrical rod. Sometimes cubic samples [41–43] are used and still we are not sure that reference coordinates system relative to the axes of anisotropy was perpendicular on the faces of the cube. Usually an “eight” angular diagram describes the polar variations of the velocity in the plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation [40,44].
Wood elastic characterization from a single sample by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy
2012, UltrasonicsCitation Excerpt :Fast measurements can be obtained by using different techniques based on ultrasonic (or acoustic) wave propagations in direct contact [3,4] or in a coupling medium (e.g., water) with a protective coating if dry wood properties have to be measured [5,6]. These techniques allow the determination of the diagonal terms of the elastic tensor on a unique parallelepipedic sample [7] but, except in some cases with a polyhedral [8] or spherical samples [6,9], they usually require other samples, and/or coupling with other kind of measurements, for the determination of off-diagonal terms [10–14]. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) could offer a good alternative because the determination of the entire specimen elastic constants can be obtained from only one sample thanks to non-contact measurements of its resonant frequencies.
