The resulting deficits in the supply of moisture and nutrients (especially nitrogen) can be seen in the poor development and inferior aesthetic quality of these trees. The dimensions of a planting hole that are necessary to meet the tree’s demands can be estimated based on the water balance and the nitrogen supply. In this paper, some examples are presented of dimensions calculated in this manner, with an emphasis on the supply of nutrients. Preliminary results are also given of research in The Netherlands concerning the effects of restricted rootable soil on the growth of trees. ER -
