Post-transplant response was compared with the root growth activity of established trees at the time of transplanting. Root growth rate of established trees at transplanting was not related to transplantability. Green ash and tree lilac transplanted well at all dates. Scarlet oak and Turkish hazelnut transplanted poorly during the late spring and early fall, but survival was good in early spring and mid fall.
