Foreign DNA encoding beta-glucuronidase (GUS) was introduced into internode sections using microprojectile- or Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Positive signals were detected by Southern analysis. Also, some enzymatic activity was detected in Agrobacterium transformed cultures using a fluorogenic assay.
